Am. Legion Minutes
June 18, 2020
The meeting
was gaveled to order by Commander Jennings-Flynn at 1900.
Officer roll
was called and it was determined a quorum was present. There was a total of thirteen members
present.
Chaplin
Mackellar opened our meeting with a prayer followed by presentation of the
colors and the POW-MIA flags. The
Commander led the Pledge of Allegiance and the preamble to the Legion
constitution.
A motion was
made by George Snell, Jr. to accept the February Minutes. The motion was seconded by Keith Mackellar
and passed by voice vote.
There were
two awards presented. George Snell, Jr. was awarded Legionnaire of the year for
Division Two. Tamela Jennings-Flynn received
an award for 2nd Division Woman’s Veteran activities.
The Adjutant
gave a membership report. We currently
have 170 members which put us at 91.89% of our 2019/2020 goal of 185.
Committee
Reports
Finance: George reported our current assets are ~$25k
and our CDs are ~$10k. A motion to
approve the report subject to review was made by Mike Flynn and seconded by
Brad Halladay. Richard Cole, president
of the ALR, reported that they had $850 and recently donated $500 leaving a
current balance of $350.
Service
Officer: David Stephens was not present but David Holguin and George Snell gave
us an update on Boys State. We had
twelve boys participating. The event was
conducted on-line (a first). Tomas Maldonado was elected Governor and Jackson
Robuck was elected mayor of Berry City. Tomas
was also elected Senator to Boys Nation which was cancelled due to the corona
virus.
Old
Business:
Flag
retirement – We talked about doing this earlier in the year, but the virus shut
everything down. We agreed to conduct a
ceremony and dispose of as many of the flags we have on hand. This will occur on Saturday July 4th
at 8AM in the field behind the VFW Hall.
Memorial Day
service at the Museum in Tomball. There
were about a dozen Legion members in attendance as well as a contingent from
the VFW. George Snell gave an address
filling in for Commander Jennings-Flynn.
Precinct 4 Commissioner, Jack Cagle, and several other elected officials
along with VFW commander also spoke.
Following the speeches, we laid wreaths at each of the headstones.
We did not
hold 2020-2021 elections. It was agreed
that all current officers would continue in their current positions for the
coming year. We had one vacancy, 2nd
Vice Commander and Commander Jennings-Flynn appointed Brad Halladay to the
position.
Ed Schott
reported that the VA hospital is not permitting visitors to enter the
premises. Alternatives were suggested
and Fred Kelly said the VFW would take them for a garage sale coming up July 24th. Anyone who has books to donate should bring
them to Fred at the VFW.
The SAL
program needs help. I went on line and found there are only two members paid up
for 2020 (Pat Rogers and Jim Wells). The
program needs twelve members to start a squadron. Any member of the legion can join if his
father served in the military. I’ve
checked our files and can’t find any SAL paperwork. It was decided we would follow up on this at
our next meeting.
New
Business:
Commander
Jennings-Flynn appointed George Snell, Jr., Ed Schott and Fred Kelly to take
inventory of what we have and provide her a list of what is needed. Specially, we are talking about flags,
bunting and promotional materials. A
motion to allocate an initial amount of $500.00 was made by George and seconded
by Keith Mackellar. Motion passed on a voice vote.
Sick
Call:
Commander
Tamela brough to our attention a member of our post is having medical problems
which is putting a strain on their finances.
George made a motion that we give them $500.00 to help with medical expenses. The motion was seconded by Mike Flynn and
passed on a voice vote.
Jim Hornaday
told us Roy Fletcher is in the hospital and will be having surgery soon.
Good
of the Legion:
The VFW is
sponsoring a blood drive June 26th.
Keith
Mackellar told us he was at Starbucks recently and the barista thanked him for
his service and gave him a free cup of coffee.
